Accelario AWS RDS Virtualization Cost Calculator
Product Description:
Overview
The Accelario AWS RDS Virtualization cost calculator is a sophisticated tool designed to empower users with the ability to optimize their AWS RDS costs through Accelario Virtualization. This calculator serves as a wizard, guiding users through various scenarios to determine the most cost-effective approach for running their testing infrastructure on AWS RDS. It leverages EC2 with Accelario’s Virtualization technology, offering a detailed financial comparison to highlight potential savings.
Goals and Values
Efficiency: Automates the cost calculation process, allowing users to swiftly evaluate the economic viability of different virtualization scenarios.
Transparency: Provides explicit insights into the costs associated with each scenario, including monthly and annual expenses, storage costs, and the financial advantages of choosing one scenario over another.
Customization: Offers customizable parameters to align the calculator with the user's specific needs, ensuring that the generated insights are both relevant and precise.
Integration: Seamlessly integrates with the live AWS Price list API to fetch real-time, accurate pricing data, ensuring that the cost calculations are always based on the latest information.
Key Features
Cost Analysis: Delivers comprehensive details on monthly and annual costs for selected instances, alongside storage costs for the chosen scenarios. It also facilitates a direct cost-saving comparison between various scenarios.
Customizable Parameters: Enables users to specify:
AWS region.
Type of RDS database (Oracle, MS SQL, Postgres).
Size of the production database in GB, with a default setting of 2000 GB.
The number of staging environments, ranging from 1 to 20, with a default value of 5.
EC2 instance type, showcasing different CPU/Memory configurations.
Internal parameters (are not user-configurable in the current version of the calculator).
Virtualization reducing shrink rate, allowing for database size reduction up to 90%.
On-the-fly database compression rate at 60%.
This tool is tailored for organizations aiming to reduce their AWS RDS running costs while maintaining operational efficiency and transparency. By providing detailed insights and flexible parameters, it enables users to make informed decisions that align with their specific requirements and financial objectives.

UX Interactions
Calculate costs:
Upon entering the required parameters and pressing the "Calculate" button, the service immediately updates to display the costs associated with the provided parameters. This process is designed to be both intuitive and efficient, allowing users to quickly assess the financial implications of their virtualization strategies.Detailed cost breakdown: By clicking on the displayed cost amount of instance or storage, users are presented with a detailed breakdown of the product details, including the AWS product code and the price per hour. This feature is intended to enhance transparency, enabling users to understand exactly what they are being charged for.
Region-specific availability: The service is aware of the regional availability of specific offers. If a chosen offer is not accessible in the selected region, the service will promptly return an error message, informing the user of the limitation.
Calculation Method Notes
Pricing basis: The service calculates costs based on AWS's regular on-demand pricing. This ensures that the cost estimates are aligned with AWS's standard rates, providing a reliable basis for financial planning.
Exclusions: Costs associated with the Accelario Virtualization service itself are not included in the calculations. Users should consider these costs separately to obtain a comprehensive view of their total expenses.
RDS cost calculation: The RDS products are calculated using the Bring Your Own License (BYOL) method. The deployment option is set to Single-AZ with EBS storage and an Enterprise SQL license. This approach reflects a common scenario for users looking to optimize their database costs while maintaining high performance and reliability.
Appendix.
Calculation formula of required volume size, details
GI size = Size of the Production database * On-the-fly DB compression rate.
Required volume size = GI size + The number of staging environments*GI size (1-Virtualization reducing shrink rate)
