The work of the virtualization is accomplished through the use of (2) types of agents, a GI (Gold Image) agent (installed on the source database), and a target agent. When a Virtual Database (VDB) is meant to be launched on the same server as the source database, both agents can be installed on the same server as long as the ports are modified so as to not collide with the same port number. These agents must be executed with root privileges.

While the GI agent is responsible for attaching to the source server and building of the Gold Images (GIs), the target agent is responsible for creation of the VDBs on the destination server.
